Trucking Companies Are Hiring Felons To Help Fill Void

As a felon, it can be difficult to find a job. This is an area where the past can come back to haunt you, and the mistakes that you’ve made in the past continue to persist. Many employers hear the word felony and automatically assume that it was violent or that you haven’t changed. Finding adequate employment is proven as one of the best ways to prevent individuals from committing another crime. Trucking companies that hire felons is an area to look when initially searching for a job because you may be limited in your options.

A felony might not be as detrimental to getting hired as a major traffic infraction since your primary job will be to drive. Be honest on your application and give the companies the benefit of the doubt when it comes to your employment or another history. Trucking companies must follow federal regulations and conduct an in-depth background check on all applicants. This process is the pre-employment screening and includes items such as your addresses, employment history, criminal screening and a full investigation into your driving record. If you don’t put something on the application, it’s likely that they will find it anyway and you’ll lose credibility. You don’t want to start off on the wrong foot by lying right from the start.

Trucking companies look at numerous factors when hiring new employees. A felony is not an automatic disqualification for getting hired. Typically trucking companies that hire felons look at alternative factors such as prior steady employment, graduation from a trucking school or CDL program, experience driving with your CDL is a plus, and you should have a clean driving record with no DWI, DUI or reckless driving conditions listed. A proper training program includes a combination of learning basic concepts in the classroom and practical application that includes truck maintenance and actually driving a truck on the road. When training is complete you’ll need to pass an exam to ensure you know the concepts and complete a road test similar to the one you take to get a regular license.

Being involved in the trucking industry isn’t the easiest job to have. There is a shortage of drivers in the United States because many people don’t want to drive for a living or would rather have a position where they can be home with their families at night. Due to the shortage, this field is one that is more forgiving of those who have a felony conviction. The starting pay rate for truck drivers is significantly higher than minimum wage and earning potential increases with experience.

Trucking Companies That Will Hire Drivers With Felonies:

  • A.D. Transport: Felonies need to be 5 years old.
  • A & R Logistics: Drivers must consent to a review of all felonies and other convictions that prohibit entry into Canada.
  • Averitt Express: All convictions reviewed case-by-case.
  • Barr-Nunn Transportation: Felonies must be 7 years old or more
  • Bennett Motor Express: Felony needs to be more than 7 years old.
  • Boyd Bros. Transportation: No felony in the past 5 years (a felony will be evaluated on a case by case basis).
  • CT Transportation, LLC: No felonies within the last 10 years.
  • CTL Transportation, LLC: No felonies within the last 10 years.
  • CalArk: None recent, all reviewed.
  • Carter Express, Inc.: Felony or misdemeanor convictions may preclude employment.
  • Celadon Group: Felonies are taken case-by-case. Drivers convicted of rape, murder, sale/manufacture/distribution of a controlled substance, or registered sex offenders will not be considered.
  • Covenant Transport: Felony convictions within the last 5 years will generally be considered disqualifying (However, exceptions are possible for certain debt-related offenses (bounced checks, child support, etc.) and certain non-violent domestic-related issues.). All felonies over 5 years will be reviewed. All misdemeanor convictions within 5 years will be reviewed. Applicants with an active parole or warrant for arrest will be subject to further investigation. Probation with permission from Probation Officer is reviewable. Patterns of behavior exhibited by criminal convictions and other sources will be of significance.
  • C.R. England: Conviction must be 10 years old, taken case-by-case depending on the nature of offense.
  • Dart Transit Company: Every applicant is assessed on a case-by-case basis
  • Dick Lavy Trucking: Felonies must be at least 10 years old
  • Don Hummer Trucking: Taken case-by-case. Drug convictions must be at least 5 years old.
  • E.L. Hollingsworth: No felonies within 5 yrs (subject to HR/Safety approval)
  • Eagle Express Lines: No conviction involving drugs, alcohol or other controlled substances. No conviction involving leaving the scene of an accident
  • Estenson Logistics: No felony convictions within the last 7 years,
  • FirstFleet, Inc.: No felony convictions within past 7 years.
  • Fischer Trucking: Felonies and misdemeanors must be at lest 5 years old, including probation or parole.
  • G & P Trucking Company: No felony convictions within last ten years. No felony, theft, or larceny conviction within the applicant’s lifetime that resulted in an active prison or jail sentence.
  • Groendyke Transport: 5-7 years, following TSA Background Check Disqualifying Offenses guidelines.
  • HVH Transportation: Felony must be at least 7 years old with no restrictions on getting Haz-Mat endorsement.
  • Hornady Transportation: Felony must be at least 7 years old.
  • Hunt Transportation: Felonies must be over 10 years old.
  • J. B. Hunt: Taken on a case-by-case basis, depends on offense.
  • Knight Transportation: Taken on a case-by-case basis.
  • Koch Trucking: Must be at least 5 years from conviction, reviewed case-by-case.
  • Lone Star Transportation: Felonies are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
  • Maverick Transportation: Felonies are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
  • May Trucking Company: Each felony conviction is reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
  • Melton Truck Lines: Felony must be at least 5 years old.
  • Mesilla Valley Transportation: No violent crimes, no convictions in past 5 years.
  • Mercer Transportation: Felony must be at least 10 years old.
  • Midwest Motor Express: Felonies reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
  • Millis Transfer: Felonies reviewed case-by-case.
  • Navajo Express, Inc.: No felonies in the last 10 years. Criminal felony/misdemeanor convictions evaluated on a case-by-case basis
  • New England Motor Freight (NEMF): No specific policy, entire background is taken into consideration case-by-case.
  • Ozark Motor Lines, Inc.: Potential drivers must have NO felonies that are LESS THAN 10 years old from release date or end of probation.
  • P & S Transportation: Has to be 10 yrs ago or more and is evaluated case by case.
  • PAM Transport: Felonies are reviewed on a case-by-case basis according to the nature and gravity of the offense or offenses, the time that has passed since the conviction and/or completion of the sentence, and the nature of the job held or sought.
  • Paschall Truck Lines: No felonies or DUI’s in the last 5 years.
  • Premier Transportation: No felonies within the past 10 years. Any other criminal convictions will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
  • Prime, Inc.: An affirmative answer to the questions regarding criminal record will not automatically result in the denial of employment. An applicant’s criminal record will be evaluated based on the job for which the applicant has applied.
  • Roehl Transport Felonies are taken on a case-by-case basis.
  • Salmon Companies: No felonies or DUI’s in the last 5 years.
  • Schneider: All convictions are evaluated on a case by case basis.
  • Southern Refrigerated Transport: All felonies reviewed by management.
  • Star Fleet Trucking: Felony must be at least 10 years old, and not drug or alcohol related.
  • Stevens Transport: No current probation or parole.
  • SuperService: No felony convictions in the past 7 years. No felony drug convictions or sex offender convictions.
  • Swift Transportation: Must be over 10 years old
  • Tennant Truck Lines: 2 DUI/DWI Convictions regardless of time is a disqualification. All record of felony conviction must be reviewed by Safety
  • TMC Transportation No felonies, drug convictions, or DUI in the past 10 years.
  • Tutle & Tutle Trucking: 3 years for any felonies, moving violations, & DOT violations.
  • Trimac Evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
  • U.S. Xpress: Felony theft – 10 years, DUI 5 years, Petty – 3 years. All others are case-by-case, subject to review.
  • USA Truck Felonies are taken case-by-case.
  • Venture Logistics: No felonies in the last 10 years.
  • Waggoners Trucking Company: Conviction of felony offenses will be considered on a case-by-case basis with the final approval of the Safety Department. Must have 5-years of stable employment in society after incarceration.
  • Watkins Shepard: Case-by-case. Work history, motor vehicle history, and criminal history as a whole.
  • WEL Companies: Taken on a case-by-case basis, generally new drivers no felony or misdemeanor in the last 5 years, experienced drivers no felonies last 4 years, misdemeanors 3 years.
  • Werner: Felonies reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
  • Wilson Trucking: 3-7 years, depending on offense. HAZMAT required, so TSA Disqualifying Offenses and Factors apply.
  • XPO Logistics: Felony convictions are not instant disqualifiers. All criminal (both felony and misdemeanor) history is reviewed on a case by case basis. Drivers must be hazmat eligible.
